PORT XXI aims to identify and evaluate the deployment of transformative environmental monitoring and management services that could help ports minimize their environmental impact, while keeping operational costs contained by taking advantage of EARTH OBSERVATION, SATCOM and SAT NAV infrastructures, in combination with information gathered from other sources such as CCTV, data repositories, in situ sensors, mobile sensors, using autonomous robotic solutions and incorporating Big Data and AI techniques for automatic knowledge extraction.

Although focused on ports, PORT XXI will try to create a business model that encompasses other coastal users, providing tailored services, based on the same data sources. These users could be, for instance, local authorities, civil protection, regional governments, environmental agencies, fisheries, aquaculture, oil and gas, recreational nautics and nautical tourism. Several channels could be used to provide these services, such as web-based or mobile-based.
